Steven R. Smith es un música compositor y guitarrista quien ha estado activo dede mediados de los '90 cuando salen sus dos primeros discos y comienza con su primera banda Mirza. Cuando en Mirza se separaron, con otros dos músicos Smith formó Thuja, editando varios discos en sellos como Jewelled Antler, Emperor Jones y Important Records, entre otros. Continuó grabando en solitario e influenciado por el folk tradicional de la Europa occidente y oriente, empezó con su proyecto Hala Strana, publicando cerca de cuatros discos en Jewelled Antler, Emperor Jones y Last Invisible Dog. Realmente me encanta el tema "The Three King" de tu álbum "Owl". ¿Cómo surgió la idea para esta canción ?

"Me alegra saber que ti te gustó 'The Tree King'. No estoy seguro como de verdad responder a esta pregunta. Fue hecho juntando varias capas de instrumentos. Nada fue escrito en forma previa a grabarlo, simplemente puse una pista a la vez, probablemente la línea básica de guitarra fue primero y luego comencé a agregarle drones y lo que sea que está allí. Todo eso probablemente tomó un total de 45 minutos en ser creado y luego allí estaba el resultado. Para ser honesto, no tenía ninguna idea de donde surgió ('The Tree King')".

¿En qué tipo de registros de campo estás interesado en Thuja?

Pero no soy un experto y es la música de la que estoy interesado. A pesar de decir esto, soy un fan de algunos escritores y cineastas de esa zona como Bruno Schulz, Frank Kafka, el cineasta Sergei Parajanov, las pinturas de la vida de la villa Belarus de Marc Chagall, etc. Todos esos han tenido un efecto en la música de Hala Strana".

Nos puedes comentar de qué se tratan las ediciones de los chapbooks. Revisé el diccionario y es algo como pequeños libritos de romances. ¿De qué se trata?

"Bueno, los chapbooks son a menudo referidos a pequelos libros que contienen baladas, poemas, cuentos y arte. Los chapbooks que he realizado tienden a estar en esta descripción y son casi como panfletos que contienen algún texto y dibujo que he hecho, usualmente en relación a un disco como 'Kohl' y caso como todos las ediciones de Hala Strana. Esto es algo que simplemente sentí hacer para agregar a la edición, harle un poco más de arte y texto de lo que tu usualmente obtendrías de un CD o LP".

Steven R. Smith is a music composer and guitar player who has been active since the mid '90's when he did his first solo releases and started then his first band Mirza. When Mirza split-up Smith and other two musicians formed Thuja releasing several albums on Jewelled Antler, Emperor Jones and Important Records, among others. He continue with his solo recordings and based on traditional folk of Central and Eastern Europe he started with his project Hala Strana releasing about four CD's on Jewelled Antler, Emperor Jones and Last Invisible Dog. Digitalis Industries released last year the new 'Owl' CD album that shows his guitar soundscapes and intimate ambience. www.worstward.com

I really love the song 'The Tree King' from your 'Owl' album. How did you come up with the idea for this song?

"I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed 'The Tree King'. I'm not sure how to really answer your question. It was put together just using layers of instruments. Nothing was really written out prior to recording it, I just laid down one track at a time, probably the basic guitar line first, and then started adding drones and whatever else is on there. The whole thing probably took a total of 45 minutes to create, and then there it was. To be honest, I have no idea where it came from."

What kind of field recordings you are interested in Thuja?

"In Thuja, the use of the term 'field recording' usually refers to the method in which we record the group's performances which are often in non-rock circumstances such warehouses, backyards, art galleries, etc. Thuja has never recorded in a proper recording studio. We often use just a standard stereo "field recording" microphone and rarely, if ever, do overdubs or anything like that. It's almost always been a direct representation of what we did at that moment. The term could also refer to tapes of wind, rain, etc. that are sometimes used in the actual performance itself. We use a variety of sound sources in a Thuja performance. So we may be using field recordings that we had previously recorded out in the world in the performance which, at the same time, is also being documented and recorded in a "field recording" type manner. So it's both, really."

To compose the music for Hala Strana are you also interested in the Eastern and Central Europe's culture as their history, language, religion, etc.?

"I do have an interest in the literature, films, and general culture of Eastern and Central Europe and this certainly informs the music I've made as Hala Strana. But I'm no expert, and it's the music that I am really concerned with. Having said that though, I am a fan of particular writers and filmmakers from that area such as Bruno Schulz, Franz Kafka, the filmmaker Sergei Parajanov, Marc Chagall's paintings of village life in Belarus, etc. These have all had an effect on Hala Strana's music."

Please let us know about your chapbooks editions. I looked in the dictionary and it something like little romance books. What is it all about??

"Well, chapbooks are often referred to as small books containing ballads, poems, tales, and art. The chapbooks I've done tend to fall into this description and they're almost like pamphlets which contain some text and artwork I've done, usually in relation to a record such as my "Kohl" release and most of the Hala Strana releases. This is just something that I felt like doing to add to the release, give a little bit more artwork and text than you would usually get with a CD or LP these days."
